What is estate administration? 

Estate administration is the legal and practical process of managing someone’s affairs after they pass away. It ensures all assets, including (but not limited to) property, pensions, savings and possessions are collated, and any debts or outstanding tax requirements (such as inheritance tax) are settled. 

The remaining estate can then be distributed to the correct beneficiaries. This administrative process is a legal requirement, and can be completed whether there is, or is not, a valid Will in place.  

Typically, straightforward estate administration takes around 6-12 months, however circumstances such as the sale of a property, a property abroad, HMRC inspection or dealing with trusts and shares can significantly impact the timeline. You’ll be able to discuss this in detail with your solicitor when you begin the process.
