Kate Smith

Kate joined the firm in September 2014 and is based in our Southampton (Bitterne) office. Kate works in our Wills, Trusts and Succession Department and deals with the preparation of Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and administering estates of all types.

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

  • Legal Practice Course (LPC), 2006. Distinction
  • Admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, October 2012
  • Admitted as a Solicitor, January 2017 and appointed as an Associate Solicitor in the firm, April 2018
  • Full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), January 2013
  • Full member of Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), March 2016
  • Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Champion, July 2014


Experience and Expertise

  • Over 13 years of working in law, initially as a Chartered Legal Executive and then as a Solicitor
  • Drafting all types of Wills from basic Wills to those more complex in their nature (fully discretionary, nil rate band discretionary trusts, vulnerable person trust and life interest trust Wills)
  • Advising clients on current legislation regarding Inheritance Tax
  • Drafting and registering Lasting Powers of Attorney, registering Enduring Powers of Attorney, and drafting Ordinary Powers of Attorneys
  • Advising attorneys and deputies on their ongoing duties
  • Making deputyship applications to the Court of Protection
  • Assisting Partners of the firm where we act as Attorney and Deputy
  • Dealing with the administration of estates where the deceased left a Will (probate), and where they did not (intestacy)
  • Acting on behalf of the Partners of the firm where they act as Trustees of ongoing trusts
  • Drafting Declarations of Trust for homeowners and others, and advising as to the severance of joint tenancies
  • Departmental supervisor
